❓1. How to choose the right gear range for your riding style?

  • A wide range (e.g. 10–51 or 10–52) makes steep climbs easier.
  • A narrower range offers smoother transitions and suits rolling terrain or performance riding.

❓2. How many speeds should you choose (10, 11, 12 speeds)?

  • 10 speeds: sturdy and economical, ideal for touring or older bikes.
  • 11 speeds: a good balance of versatility and simplicity.
  • 12 speeds: very wide range, ideal for XC, trail, modern enduro.

❓3. How to check the compatibility of your cassette with your MTB?

  • Freehub body:
    Shimano HG → 8/9/10/11 speeds (except 12S Shimano).
    Shimano Micro-Spline → cassettes 12 speeds Shimano.
    SRAM XD → SRAM cassettes 10 teeth (11V/12V).

  • Derailleur / chain: they must be compatible with the number of speeds.

  • Brand: avoid mixing SRAM/Shimano on cassette + shifter/derailleur, except in specific cases that are compatible but not optimal.

  • Steel: very durable, economical, heavier.
  • Aluminium: light but wears out faster.
