Bike saddle – The saddle for road cycling

The bike saddle, as everyone knows, is where you sit when you ride a bike! With the pedals and the handlebar, is one of the 3 contact points between the cyclist and their road bike. The choice of saddle is all the more important as it largely determines the rider's comfort. Saddles have also evolved enormously over the last fifty years. From the single model with a simple stretched leather layer, we have moved to saddles with a shell and padding, anatomical shapes and varied models depending on different body sizes.

A bike saddle consists of rails (to attach the saddle to the carriage of the seatpost), a shell (the shape of which varies depending on the models and manufacturers), padding (more or less thick depending on the areas of the saddle) and a top layer. The rails can be made of titanium, aluminium or steel, the shell is generally made of nylon and the top layer has moved from leather to synthetic materials. It is now easy to make saddles that weigh under 200 grams, even more so since the arrival of carbon. You can now find carbon on the rails, on the shell and even find saddles made entirely of carbon!
