How to fit MTB trigger shifters?

This operation is relatively straightforward to carry out on your mountain bike. Here is how to do it yourself.

Steps

If you are replacing old MTB shifters, you will first need to remove any other components already fitted to the handlebar: grips, brake levers, suspension lockouts or dropper post levers,...

  1. Slide the shifter onto the MTB handlebar first. 
  2. Then place the brake lever followed by the grip. 
  3. Adjust the distance between the trigger and the grip so that it does not hinder your grip on the handlebar, while remaining close enough to operate the trigger quickly. 
  4. Finally, orient the shifter along the axis of your arms for the most natural use possible. 
  5. Tighten the trigger clamp bolt to the lowest torque value specified by the shifter or handlebar manufacturer.
    Probikeshop tip: make sure to respect the lowest torque value to avoid damaging the handlebar during fitting or in the event of a crash.
  6. Repeat steps 1 to 5 to fit the other shifter. Use a ruler to place the components at the same distance on both sides of the handlebar.

The triggers are now fitted. All that remains is to adjust your derailleurs.
