How to maintain your MTB hubs?
If your MTB hub contains sealed bearings, these will not require maintenance but simply replacement when they are faulty. On the other hand, a hub with cup-and-cone bearings requires regular maintenance to preserve their original performance. Here is how to proceed on your MTB.

Steps
We recommend carrying out this operation once or twice a year, depending on the frequency and intensity of your rides.
- Hold the hub cone in place using the cone spanner, then loosen the lock nut with the flat spanner.
- Unscrew and remove the lock nut, washer, spacer and cone. Probikeshop tip: make a note of the order and orientation of these components.
- Pull on the now-free axle to remove it from the hub. Probikeshop tip: be careful, the bearings may fall out of the hub at this point.
- Remove all the bearings from the hub, then clean all the components with a cloth and a degreaser. Take the opportunity to check the condition of all these parts.
- Grease the cups in which the bearings sit.
- Replace the bearings in the cups.
- Refit the axle, then the cone, spacer, washer and nut assembly. Probikeshop tip: make sure the bearings stay in place when you insert the axle.
- Now adjust the axle play and bearing smoothness using the cone. Tightening it with the spanner will eliminate play; loosening it will improve smoothness. You therefore need to find the right adjustment so that there is no more play while maintaining good bearing smoothness.
- When the adjustment is correct, hold the cone in position with the spanner, then tighten the lock nut to secure everything.
- Check that the adjustment is correct. Repeat step 8 if necessary, having first loosened the lock nut.
