How to determine the wear level of a chain?
You hear all sorts of conflicting advice about checking wear on chains. Even if you can tell at a glance that the chain is worn, be aware that there is a very simple and inexpensive tool to check it reliably and limit the number of components that need replacing at the same time.
As simple as it is obvious: gears become unstable or shift poorly and the drivetrain is noisy when the components are too worn. So, if that is the case, there is no doubt — the chain needs replacing. However, this method does not determine whether it is worn to the point of needing to replace the cassette as well.
The tool used to measure the level of wear is a chain wear indicator, which measures the elongation of your chain: a first level at +0.075 mm and another at +0.1 mm. At the first level, only the chain needs replacing; at the second, at least the chain and cassette need replacing.
