How to regularly maintain and check your MTB?

Maintaining your MTB is essential if you want to keep it in good condition for as long as possible, and also to detect any potential issue and avoid an unpleasant surprise in the middle of a ride.

Steps

  1. Wash your bike with a water jet and specific cleaning products to avoid damaging the seals, brake pads or paintwork. Using brushes, thoroughly clean all the hard-to-reach areas such as the bottom bracket, the chain and the MTB cassette.
    Probikeshop tip: avoid using a high-pressure washer, which can damage the seals, bearings, and even the paintwork or stickers.
  2. Dry sensitive components such as the bearings, the MTB drivetrain and the suspension with a cloth to prevent rust from setting in. Probikeshop tip: take the opportunity to check the condition of the parts and the welds on your frame to detect any potential issue.
  3. Once dry, you can polish and protect the paintwork of your MTB frame with a polish and a clean cloth.

  4. Lubricate the following points:
    - The drivetrain with specific oil;
    - The suspension stanchions with specific oil.

  5. Now that your bike is clean and lubricated, check the following points:
    - Tightness of your wheel axles, brake callipers/discs and cockpit components;
    - Tightness of all bolts on your bike;
    - Wear of your brake pads;
    - Wear of your drivetrain;
    - Play in the headset;
    - Play in the wheels;
    - Play in the suspension;
    - Play in the bottom bracket.
