Mud, rain, dirt, dust… Your electric mountain bike (e-MTB) is exposed to various hazards during your rides, particularly in winter. While your e-MTB is designed to handle difficult terrain and conditions without issue, regular maintenance remains essential to ensure its efficiency and performance over time.
Maintaining an electric mountain bike is similar to maintaining a non-assisted MTB. This general maintenance involves regular cleaning of the e-MTB and careful monitoring of drivetrain wear. Particular emphasis is also placed on protecting the electronic components of the assistance system, such as the battery, which must be treated with the utmost care throughout the year.
Probikeshop gives you all its top tips to help you properly maintain your electric mountain bike.
Why maintain your electric mountain bike?
Purchasing an electric mountain bike represents a significant investment, which should be appreciated over its lifespan. The idea is to enjoy your e-bike in perfect working order for as long as possible, to be able to go out regularly throughout the year, including in the worst mud, cold or snow conditions. Extending the lifespan of your e-MTB means taking care of its frame and its various components through regular maintenance, including the usual operations: cleaning, wear inspection and function checks.
An electric mountain bike has the same geometry and the same basic equipment as a non-assisted MTB. The standard MTB components (tyres, derailleurs, chain, brakes…) are subject to the same type of wear, but to a greater degree, as the bike is heavier and faster. The drivetrain of electric mountain bikes represents a particularly critical point, as it must withstand the pulling force of the pedal motor.
The motor, battery and control display are the distinctive components of your e-MTB. These parts contain electronics that must be well protected from the elements (dust, rain, snow, mud and other debris).
Maintaining the battery of your e-MTB
Usually made up of lithium-ion cells, the battery is an essential component of your electric mountain bike. The normal functioning of the cells can be affected by a strong impact or by extreme temperatures, which may reduce the battery's capacity. This is why battery storage conditions are very important, especially in winter.
How to charge and store your e-MTB battery in the best conditions?
How to maintain the battery of your e-MTB?
If you have a problem with your battery, you are strongly advised not to open it to attempt a repair! For the maintenance of the assistance system components, you should contact a professional who will carry out the diagnosis.
To clean the battery, you must absolutely not wash it with a high-pressure jet of water! It is recommended to always remove the battery from the frame to clean it separately, before rinsing the e-MTB with a gentle stream of water. A damp cloth is sufficient to remove the dirt and mud that has splashed onto the battery. You can also use contact cleaners to take better care of the connectors and pins. This simple action helps protect this sensitive equipment against wear and oxidation. If you regularly ride on wet terrain, you can apply grease to the contacts on a regular basis.
Maintenance of the e-MTB motor and components
Manufacturers of e-MTB solutions work on the continuous improvement of their motors, batteries and displays. They regularly offer updates aimed at optimising the component management systems, to improve and refine the operation of your e-MTB. It is of course advisable to carry out these updates by contacting your usual bike dealer.
Regular visits to a professional will also allow you to identify and resolve any malfunctions in your assistance system. Finally, the expert will be able to check critical tightening points, such as the motor unit fixings on the frame.
General maintenance of your electric mountain bike
With the powerful and torque-rich central motor of the e-MTB, the stresses placed on the drivetrain are particularly significant. As component wear is faster, it is essential to regularly check the condition of the chain. A chain wear indicator is a very handy tool that warns you when the drivetrain situation becomes critical. If the chain starts to show signs of fatigue, it is high time to replace it, otherwise the wear will spread to the cassette and chainring.
The maintenance of your electric mountain bike continues with checking the other components:
How to clean your electric mountain bike?
Riding an e-MTB often involves tackling difficult terrain and muddy conditions, particularly in winter, which put your bike to the test due to salt and snow. After a ride, you need to take care of your MTB, clean it and dry it properly.
You must remove the battery and the display before cleaning your e-MTB! You can use a bucket or a low-pressure jet of water, but definitely not a pressure washer, which could force water into the motor unit and the bearings. Using brushes, remove all the dirt from the frame, under the bottom bracket shell, on the wheels and rims, on the drivetrain… The brush is ideal for removing the bulk of the residue, before rinsing everything off with a gentle stream of water. All that remains is to dry the e-MTB and lubricate the chain, avoiding any greasy spray getting onto the brakes.
